Teeth Removal & Extraction

Performed with care, precision and a clear focus on your comfort and recovery.

Nobody wants to lose a tooth. But sometimes, removing a damaged or problematic tooth is the most responsible decision for your overall oral health. At Baloyi Dentals, tooth extraction is approached with care, precision and a clear focus on making the experience as smooth as possible for you.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Extraction is typically considered when a tooth can no longer be saved through restorative treatment. There are several situations where removal may be recommended:

  • Severe decay that has damaged the tooth structure beyond what a filling or restoration can repair
  • Advanced gum disease that has compromised the bone and tissue supporting the tooth
  • A tooth that has fractured at or below the gumline and cannot be rebuilt
  • Overcrowding, where removal creates the space needed for proper alignment
  • An infection or abscess that has not responded to other forms of treatment

In every case, Dumisani will explain why extraction is being recommended, walk you through the process and discuss any alternative options where they exist. The goal is always to preserve natural teeth where possible. Extraction is considered only when other avenues have been explored.

What Happens During an Extraction?

Before any extraction begins, a local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area completely. You should not feel pain during the procedure, though you may experience some pressure as the tooth is loosened. Dumisani uses a careful technique to remove the tooth with minimal disruption to the surrounding gum tissue and bone.

The process varies depending on the tooth's position and condition. A straightforward extraction of a fully visible tooth is generally quick and uncomplicated. More complex cases, such as teeth that have broken below the gumline or teeth with curved roots, may take a little longer but are handled with the same careful approach.

Throughout the procedure, Dumisani will keep you informed about what he is doing so there are no surprises. If at any point you feel discomfort, you can signal for a pause.

How Do You Care for the Area After Extraction?

Aftercare is an important part of proper healing. Before you leave the practice, Dumisani will give you clear post-extraction instructions. These typically include avoiding hard or crunchy foods for the first few days, not rinsing your mouth vigorously for the first 24 hours to protect the blood clot that forms in the socket, and keeping the area clean as it heals.

Mild discomfort and some swelling are normal and usually subside within a few days. Pain management advice and, if needed, a prescription will be provided before you leave. If anything concerns you during the healing process, you can contact the practice for guidance.

What Happens After the Tooth Is Removed?

Once the extraction site has healed, Dumisani will discuss your options for replacing the missing tooth if necessary. Leaving a gap can sometimes cause neighbouring teeth to shift over time, which may affect your bite and overall oral health. Depending on your situation, replacement options such as a bridge or denture may be recommended. This conversation happens at a follow-up visit, giving you time to heal and consider your options without pressure.
