Teeth Whitening

A brighter smile through safe, clinically supervised whitening — with realistic results and no guesswork.

Your teeth tell a story. Morning coffee, red wine, years of wear. Over time, even well-cared-for teeth lose some of their natural brightness. Teeth whitening at Baloyi Dentals is a controlled, clinically supervised process that reduces discolouration and helps restore a brighter, more even tone to your smile.

What Causes Tooth Discolouration?

Discolouration can happen for several reasons. External staining is often caused by foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine and certain spices. Smoking is another common contributor. These substances leave pigments on the enamel surface that accumulate gradually over months and years.

Internal discolouration works differently. It can result from factors like natural ageing, certain medications taken during childhood, excessive fluoride exposure or trauma to a tooth. Understanding the type of discolouration you have is important because it helps determine how effective whitening will be and what results you can reasonably expect.

How Does Professional Whitening Work?

Professional teeth whitening uses a controlled bleaching agent to lighten the shade of your teeth. Unlike over-the-counter products, a clinical whitening procedure is supervised by a dental professional, which means the concentration of the whitening agent is carefully managed and your gums and soft tissue are protected throughout the process.

At Baloyi Dentals, Dumisani will assess your teeth before starting treatment to determine whether whitening is appropriate for you. Not all types of discolouration respond to bleaching. Dental work such as crowns, fillings or veneers will not change colour with whitening either. These factors are discussed upfront so you have a clear understanding of what the treatment can and cannot achieve.

What Happens During the Appointment?

A protective barrier is applied to your gums to shield them from the whitening agent. The bleaching gel is then carefully applied to the surface of your teeth and left for a specific period. Depending on the system used, the process may be repeated in intervals during the same appointment to build up the desired level of whitening gradually.

The entire visit is typically completed within one to two hours. During the process, you can relax in the chair while the gel does its work. Dumisani will monitor the progress and adjust the treatment as needed.

What Should You Know Before Whitening?

Results vary from person to person. Whitening can lighten your teeth by several shades, but it does not produce the same outcome for everyone. Factors such as the type of staining, the natural colour of your enamel and your lifestyle habits all play a role.

Sensitivity is possible during and after the procedure, though it is usually temporary and manageable. Dumisani will provide you with pre-treatment guidance and post-treatment care instructions so you know exactly what to expect and how to maintain your results over time. Avoiding heavily pigmented foods and drinks for the first few days after treatment helps preserve the whitening effect.

It is also worth noting that whitening is not a permanent change. Over time, your teeth may gradually pick up new stains from everyday food and drink. Touch-up treatments can be discussed at a future visit if you wish to maintain the lighter shade long term.
